Take the wooden train from Palma to Sóller. It is over a hundred years old, rattles gorgeously, and drops you into a valley of orange groves ringed by mountains. Then the open-sided tram down to the port, past gardens and washing lines, ending at a bay where the fishing boats still come in.

Deià is the one that gets people. A village of golden stone folded into the mountainside, the sea glittering somewhere below, and a light in the late afternoon that has kept writers and painters here for a century. Have a long lunch. The road out to Formentor

North of Pollença, the island narrows into a long finger of cliff and pine reaching into the sea. The road to Cap de Formentor is all curves and viewpoints, and at the far end a lighthouse stands where the land simply runs out.

Go early. The light is better, the road is emptier, and you get the Mirador es Colomer to yourself for a few minutes — limestone dropping straight into blue, and nothing between you and the horizon.

Then, because you’re on an island and the coast keeps offering, work your way round to Cala Figuera: a fishing village wrapped around a narrow inlet, boat houses built into the rock, water the colour of sea glass. Nothing to do there. That is the point.

Mallorca rewards the day you don’t plan. One more cove, one more mountain village, dinner somewhere you found by accident — and the ferry to Menorca still there tomorrow.

Menorca slows it down further

If Mallorca is the island that surprises you, Menorca is the one that quietly resets you. Smaller, flatter, greener, and far more protected — the whole island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and it shows in what hasn’t been built.

The Camí de Cavalls is the reason to come. An old bridle path that circles the entire coastline, now walkable in stages: red cliffs on the north side, white limestone and pine on the south, and coves along the way that you reach on foot or not at all.

Cala Macarella is the one you’ve seen without knowing its name — a crescent of pale sand between white cliffs, the water turning a green-blue that photographs badly because nobody believes it. Fornells, up north, is quieter still: a white village on a long bay, and lobster stew that people cross the island for.

End a day in Ciutadella. The old town is all narrow lanes and honey-coloured stone, the harbour sits below the walls, and the sunset does something to the buildings that makes everyone stop talking for a moment.
