Stay until dark if you can. Up here the stars arrive in numbers that feel unreasonable, and the temperature drops fast enough to remind you that you are standing on a mountain in the middle of the ocean.

Then come down the other way, into Anaga. Ancient laurel forest, wet and green and dripping, ridgelines dropping to villages you reach on foot. Or west to Masca, a handful of houses in a gorge at the end of a road that seems to have been drawn by someone in a very good mood.

Fire, forest and stars

Lanzarote looks like somewhere a probe was sent. In Timanfaya the lava fields run to the horizon in black and rust, the ground is still warm a few metres down, and there is nothing growing anywhere — a landscape that has not finished cooling.

Then, twenty minutes away, La Geria: thousands of vines each sitting in its own scooped hollow of black ash, each sheltered by a low curved stone wall. It looks like an art installation and it is actually a two-hundred-year-old answer to the wind. The wine is good. The view is better.

La Gomera goes the opposite direction entirely. Garajonay is a laurel forest that has been growing since before the Ice Age, moss on every branch, cloud moving through the trees. Walking in it feels less like hiking and more like trespassing in something very old.

And La Palma is where you go to look up. Almost no light pollution, air so clear the great observatories were built here, and a night sky so dense with stars that the familiar constellations get lost in the crowd.
